Maftec / Maftac Ceramic Fiber Blanket

Maftec / Maftac ceramic fiber blanket is a bio-soluble alkaline earth silicate (AES) fiber blanket, used as a lower bio-persistent alternative to standard refractory ceramic fiber (RCF). It is rated from 1000°C to 1260°C continuous use and lines furnaces and kiln cars, and is used for expansion joints and high-temperature gaskets.

Maftec / Maftac blanket has a classification temperature of 1000°C to 1260°C for continuous use, depending on grade. Short-term exposure up to 1600°C is possible, which is the melting point, but that is not a working temperature. Shrinkage is below 3% after 24 hours at rated temperature.

Bio-soluble, or low bio-persistent, fiber dissolves in body fluids much faster than standard refractory ceramic fiber, so inhaled fibers are cleared from the lungs more quickly. Maftec / Maftac blanket uses AES fiber and is EUCEB certified. Normal dust precautions, such as masks and gloves when cutting, still apply.

Maftec / Maftac Ceramic Fiber Blanket is a bio-soluble AES fiber rated up to 1260°C, while Ceramic Fiber Blanket & Board is standard ceramic fiber rated up to 1400°C and also available as rigid board. Choose Maftec where low bio-persistent fiber is required, and standard ceramic fiber for the hottest duties.

Maftec / Maftac blanket is supplied in rolls 610 mm or 1220 mm wide and 7.2 m long, in 6, 12, 25 and 50 mm thicknesses, at a density of 96 to 128 kg/m³. The 6 mm and 12 mm thicknesses suit gaskets, seals and expansion joints, and thicker blanket is used for linings.

Maftec / Maftac blanket has a thermal conductivity of 0.10 to 0.18 W/mK at 600°C mean temperature. As a lightweight blanket, it stores little heat, which allows faster heat-up and cool-down of kilns and furnaces compared with dense brick linings.

In expansion joints, strips of Maftec / Maftac blanket are compressed into the gap so they stay tight as refractory moves with temperature. On kiln cars, it is layered as insulation under or behind the refractory, such as Insulating Fire Bricks (IFB) or Castable Refractory, and fixed or held in place by the surrounding lining.
