Rockwool Pipe Section

Rockwool pipe section is a pre-formed, split cylinder of rock wool that insulates steam lines, hot water pipes and process piping up to 650°C. It is pre-slit and hinged, so it opens and snaps onto the pipe, giving a close, uniform fit faster than wrapping slab or blanket.

Rockwool pipe section covers pipe NB sizes from 15 mm up to 600 mm, in 25, 40, 50, 65, 75 and 100 mm thicknesses, and each piece is 1000 mm long. Order by pipe NB size, not outside diameter of insulation, and state the thickness required for each line size.

Rockwool pipe section is rated for service up to 650°C, which covers most steam and process piping. Density is 100 to 120 kg/m³. For higher temperatures, or where a load-bearing insulation is needed at supports, Calcium Silicate Block & Pipe Section is used instead or as an inner layer.

Rockwool Pipe Section is preferred on standard pipe sizes up to 600 mm NB because it fits closely and installs quickly. Rockwool LRB Roll, the wired mattress, suits very large-bore pipes, bends, valves and irregular shapes where a pre-formed section is impractical. Many projects use sections on straight runs and mattress on fittings.

Open the hinged section, snap it over the pipe, and close the slit with joints butted tight and staggered on multi-layer work. Secure with Insulation Band & Buckles or tie wire, then clad with Aluminum Cladding Sheet & Coil and Self-Tapping Screw fixings. Outdoor lines need sealed, overlapping cladding to keep rain out.

Rockwool pipe section has a thermal conductivity of 0.033 to 0.040 W/mK. It is non-combustible, Class A1, and has very low water absorption. The heat-loss calculator on this site can be used to compare heat loss and surface temperature for different thicknesses on a given pipe.
